Following on from the successful delivery of the CWDF, and Platinum’s commitment to working collaboratively with BHP, Platinum was engaged to deliver part of the investigative works for the Sustaining Surface Power Project, the Slot Trench Investigation works.

This package of work Project will, following design completion, enable BHP to contract an experienced HV construction company to construct two new 11kV power lines from the ODW 132kV switchyard to the Southern Mine Area (SMA ~2.2km) to supply up to 40MVA of power to the Olympic Dam mine. This additional supply capacity is required by August 2024. Specifically, Platinum was contracted by ODAP to undertake service investigations and provide the necessary reports outlining the locations of the planned infrastructure and determine the presence of any existing infrastructure or obstructions in the area.

Scope

  • Mobilisation / de-mobilisation including the Good to Go Requirements and permits (HV permit and ECC were required)
  • Site Investigation Works, which involved the hydro excavation of trenches identified by ODAP and logging the observations
  • Preparation of a detailed Technical Report, providing the results of the Investigation in writing.

Upon award, Platinum commenced mobilisation through ODAP’s Good to Go process, utilising OPAD’s Good to Go checklist. This was a good learning curve for our personnel as the mobilisation requirements, and particularly the training requirements, were more stringent than Platinum had experienced elsewhere on the Olympic Dam site. Through constant communication with the ODAP team, Platinum team members were able to complete all steps of the Good to Go Checklist and were then given approval to mobilise to site.

The investigation locations required by ODAP were spread over a large area which crossed 3 Area Owner zones, creating a complexity to enable efficient works. Platinum negotiated with the Area Owners such that one Area Owner took ownership of all our works across the three Areas, which allowed us getting the THA signed off daily.

The successful completion of this project has provided BHP with the requisite information to provide to their designers, enabling them to complete their work. This project has also provided Platinum with an opportunity to again demonstrate their collaborative and professional approach to a second BHP team.
