Platinum was the Head Contractor directly to the MOPS division of BHP in the delivery of a strategic new facility for the ongoing mining activities at Olympic Dam.

The Contract for this project was awarded in late December 2023 and Platinum managed the mobilisation through the Christmas and New Year period, commencing machine work in early 2023.

Through this project, Platinum has proven its capability and capacity to be able to read and interpret technical material related to the services whether provided by either OEM and/or the Company, to mobilise quickly and deliver quality large-scale projects successfully and safely. It also proved to be a case study in problem solving.

Platinum has been amazing to work with. We have had many challenges on the project and Platinum has been extremely motivated to work with myself and the MOPs team to quickly resolve issues and move forward in an efficient manner. This collaborative approach has ensured that problems are resolved early before they become bigger and harder to deal with.

Significant volumes of rock were identified within the planned excavation area within the first month of the project. The presence of rock was not expected and had been specifically excluded from Platinum’s tendered lump sum. Following further site investigation, Platinum determined that approximately 30,000m3 of rock was required to be excavated for the works, potentially tripling the job budget. Platinum and BHP worked together to develop a technical solution to excavate the rock efficiently, involving swift mobilisation of rock excavation plant, including a D10 dozer and rock breaking excavators. This new approach greatly curtailed cost overruns and ensured the job was completed in a timely manner.
